Ndebele-03
The Ndebele people belong to the South Nguni ethnic group and are renowned for their beautiful decorative art, particularly their beadwork and mural painting. Ndebele women wear intricately beaded aprons. A newly married women wears rholwani (thick, beaded roll of grass) necklace, leg and arm bands. When her husband has built her a home, the rolwani is cut off and replaced with copper or brass bands. This design is based on the type of pattern beaded onto a typical five panelled apron. This type of apron has five panels or fringes hanging at its hem. TheNdebele are also known for their small beaded doll known as the uphopi (probably from poppie, the Afrikaans word for doll).
