Code: Ndebele-02
The Ndebele people, members of the South Nguni ethnic group, are renowned for their beautiful decorative art, particularly their beadwork and mural painting. Painting is done exclusively by women, young girls being taught this art by their mothers. The original paints were natural coloured clays, white, red, and ochre, as well as cow dung and charcoal. At the turn of the century, blue was added to the palate, as the result of laundry blue introduced by white traders. In recent years, the Ndebele mural artists have made use of the many colours available in acrilic paints.Their designs are mainly geometric, although it is not uncommon to find people and objects represented.
