Notes
|
Masks of this type have been found in the Popokabaka area, and attributed to the Lula people. The Lula are a splinter of the Yaka tribe, who migrated northwards, and have been influenced by the Teke.
The Lula worship the supreme being, Nzambi, but their religion is tempered with Teke beliefs. Their initiation is Yaka, but they also use Teke/Yanzi type fetishes in their camps, where young boys undergo their initiation process. Masks such as this one are used to prevent witches from coming in contact with initiates. |
